New Year, Old Problems?

01/04/2025

New Year, new beginning. Or is it? Every year we go into the new year thinking that we are starting with a clean slate and a new beginning and in some ways this is true. It is easier to start new habits on dates that have meaning to us but how can we start with a clean slate when we carry our past selves into the new year with us?  It is time to say good bye to who you use to be and take the first step to becoming the person you want to be.

This New Years was very different for me. In my family, we have always spent New Year’s Eve together, playing games, eating, and watching the ball drop. This year I spent New Year’s Eve without any of my family coming over. I did not even watch the ball drop. It felt odd but it also gave me time to reflect and think about the year that I have just finished and the one that is coming up.

This last year was a roller coaster of emotions, with super high highs and very low lows. One thing that I have realized is that many of these ups and downs could have been avoided if I had taken some extra time to sit with my feelings and process them rather than getting swept away and overwhelmed. This brought me to the realization that no matter what I decide to do, I have to change my own mindset to change my reactions.

This year, it is time to be intentional with who we want to become.   It is time to decide who I want to be in this upcoming year and begin making changes to become that person. No matter what I want to accomplish, I am not going to be able to reach my goals if who I am does not align with them.

I am going to revisit my goals and think about the type of person I would need to be if I were living those goals right now. If I truly love that person, then I will begin making that changes I need to make to become them. If that person does not align with my ideals than I need to decide if that goal is really a good fit for that person I am becoming.
